As part of efforts to discover and nurture emerging boxing talents in the squared ropes sports. The Yucateco Southwest quarterly boxing championship took center stage at the Alake Sports Center in Abeokuta over the weekend.

The event staged in collaboration with the Ogun State Sports Council attracted pugilists from Oyo, Ogun, Ekiti, Osun, Lagos, as well as the host state.
Designed to expose emerging boxing talents, the one day tournament recorded a resounding success with new talents discovered both in the male and female class, respectively.

In the male 74.9kg category, Ismail Lawal of Lagos made a light work of his opponent Esan Michael of Ekiti State as he secured a 5-0 victory. In another bout Quyum Oyakojo of Ogun state defeated Oyo State Ajeige Ayuba 4-1 in a 57.9kg and 59kg encounter. Osun State Akanmu Toheeb lost 4-1 to Lateef Qudus of Lagos in a 54.2kg and 55.2kg contest. Ogun State dominated again as the referee stop the bout in the second round as home boy Tairu Rasaq decimated Isiak Ibrahim of Osun in a 63.2kg and 64.8kg brawl.

In the female category Agboola Oyindamola of Lagos secured a 3-2 triumph against Oladeji Mariah of Oyo. Olalekan Aliyah of Ogun showed grit against Adepoju Taofeekat as the bout was stopped by the referee in the 3rd round in favor of the home girl. Ekiti stole the show this time as Lawal Ganiyat bagged a 5-0 win against Adebanjo Imole of Osun.

The coordinator of the event David Osuolale, expressed excitement as he discribed the initiative as a genuine platform for breeding younger boxers for the nation.

” Firstly, I wish to appreciate the Vice president of the Nigeria Boxing Federation Hon. Omonlei Imadu who also double as the CEO Yucateco Boxing Promotions.” His love and passion for the sport made the event possible in collaboration with the Ogun State Sports Council”.

“It’s a quarterly event, this edition was a resounding success and we hope to build on it going forward”. Osuolale added.

On his part, the Yucateco boss extolled the boxers and officials for their professionalism in the cause of the event as he pledges further consolidation with the Ogun State Sports and other Southwest boxing stakeholders in developing the sports across the region.

” As the Southwest representative in the Nigeria Boxing Federation, my projection is to make the region the hub of boxing in the country.”

“Through this quarterly championship, we hope to breed young stars that will not only fly the colors of their respective states, but represents Nigeria and the global stage.” Imadu added.

The next edition of the tournament will be staged in September 2026 before the final installment in the month of December.
