WBC World Cup: Imadu, Edun, To Sponsor Nigerian Contingent To Mexico

The MD/CEO of Yucateco Group of companies, Hon. Omonlei Imadu, in collaboration with the Hon. Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy of Nigeria Wale Edun will sponsor the Nigerian contingent to the World Boxing Council (WBC) Green and Gold World Championships slated for Mexico later this month.

The event that will converge the various qualified nations from around the world has Nigeria, Uganda, and Benin Republic as Africa’s representatives. Nigeria will parade six (6) boxers, Uganda have four (4) pugilists, while Benin has just one (1) qualified boxer on the card.

Hon. Imadu, who doubles as the CEO of Yucateco Boxing Promotions, said his outfit in partnership with “Hall Of Fame” owned by the finance minister will sponsor a twelve (12) man contingent to fly Nigeria’s flag at the event.

It will be recalled that Imadu staged the first ever WBC-ABU Amateur Tournament in Lagos in February this year, where three of the eight participating nations secured their qualification for the global championship in Mexico this October.

The Nigerian team currently in an intense training camp at the Lagos State Boxing Hall Of Fame Gym in Surulere comprises boxers, coaches, a technical director, nutritionists, R&J and a team Manager. They are expected to depart the country for Mexico in the coming days.

One of Nigeria’s medal hopeful at the event 63kg female Pan-African champion Precious Anine, said she’s already looking forward to the championship as a life changing experience for a her career fighting outside Africa for the very first time.

“I am ready to announce myself to the rest of the world in Mexico, my aim is to go there and return to Nigeria with a gold medal, it’s the first time i will be fighting outside the continent and giving all i have got to make the opportunity count for success”. Precious said.

The initiator of the first-ever amateur boxing league in Africa , Hon. Omonlei Imadu said the aim is to ensure that olympic style boxers in the country are exposed at the global stage.

In his words: ” I saw the opening for this global championship while I attended the WBC annual convention in Germany last year and i felt Nigerian boxers should be part of it, hence in partnership with the WBC and ABU i initiated the African qualifiers held in Lagos in February this year, and here we are today”. Imadu said.

The Yucateco chief commended the Hon. Minister of Finance Wale Edun for his passion and support for boxing development in the country.

” I wish to sincerely appreciate the Minister of Finance for his continued support and contribution to boxing at all level in the country, his desire and hunger to see these young pugilists star on the global stage is highly commendable”. Imadu added.

The World Boxing Council (WBC) Green and Gold Amateur Championship will be staged from October 16–19, 2025, at the Municipal Auditorium in Tijuana, Mexico.
