The Super Falcons of Nigeria have made history at the ongoing 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, Sportivationng.com reports.
Randy Waldrum-led side finished second in Group B with five points, one point adrift of co-hosts Australia.
The Super Falcons became the first African team to finish unbeaten in the group stage of the FIFA Women’s World Cup.
Nigeria have qualified for every editions of the competition, this is the third time of making it out of the Group stage.
In 1999, the team made it to the quarter-finals before losing out 4-3 to Brazil via the golden goal rule.
The team also qualified for the second round of the 2019 edition, where they lost 3-0 to Germany.
Onome Ebi’s Record At 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup
Super Falcons captain, Onome Ebi also played her way into the record books by becoming the First African player (male or female) to appear in six FIFA World Cups.
She has played two matches at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup so far, coming off the bench against Australia and Republic of Ireland.
Asisat Oshoala’s World Cup Record
Asisat Oshoala also became the first African to score in three FIFA Women’s World Cup.
The Barcelona Femeni forward scored in her first World Cup in Canada 2015 against Sweden in a 3-3 draw.
She followed it up with another goal in the 2019 edition against South Korea as the Super Falcons ran out 2-0 winners.
The Super Falcons will take on the top team in Group D in the second round for a place in the quarter-finals.
England currently lead the Group with six points, while Denmark and China have three points respectively.
The Group D will be concluded on Tuesday when England take on China and Denmark will battle it out with Haiti.
