Napoli’s Victor Osimhen has been crowned 2023 Italian Footballers’ Association (AIC) player of the year, after leading Napoli to their first Serie title in 33 years, Sportivationng.com reports.
The Super Eagles star played a pivotal role in the title triumph and was the team’s poster boy.
The award started in 1968 and it is aimed to honour players in the league for their key contributions.
Osimhen has now joined the class of great players who have won the award, the enviable list contains the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Andrea Pirlo, Cristiano Ronaldo, Gianluigi Buffon and Rafael Leao.
He scored 26 goals in 32 Serie A appearances for Napoli as they stormed to the league title.
Luciano Spalletti, who was in charge of the team was named the coach of the year.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia won the goal of the year for his stunning strike against Atalanta in March.
Osimhen has battled with injury this season, however, he has scored six goals in 10 Serie A matches for Napoli.
He was in action in the team’s 3-0 home loss to Inter Milan on Sunday.
Osimhen will be hoping to inspire Napoli to an immediate response when they take on Juventus on Friday.
