The stage is set for an exciting showcase of grassroots football talent following the official draw for the maiden edition of the Delta Senators U-19 Unifier Cup.

A competition designed to discover and nurture young players across Delta State.

Speaking during the draw ceremony, the convener of the tournament and Special Assistant on Sports Development to the Senator representing Delta South Senatorial District, Senator Joel Onowakpo Thomas.

Ambassador Omagufi Onoriode, emphasized that the initiative was inspired by a commitment to develop football at the grassroots level.

The ex-Super Eagles international player noted that Delta State is richly blessed with football talent, adding that the competition aims to provide a platform for young players to shine while also giving back to society.

According to him, the three senators from the state have thrown their support behind the project to ensure its success, with a shared vision of empowering youths and promoting unity through sports.

He further explained that the tournament will also serve as an avenue to engage football lovers across the state.

Setting the tone for the competition, the Secretary of the Delta State Football Association, Patrick Mariere, who represented the FA Chairman, Chief Godwin Adode, outlined key rules and guidelines for participating teams.

Similarly, a member of the DFA, Henry Favour revealed that the tournament will run for 10 days, with matches proceeding directly to penalty shootouts if tied at full time, as extra time will not be played.

He stressed that the competition is strictly for players under the age of 19, warning that no player registered in the Nigeria National League (NNL) will be eligible to participate.

To ensure compliance and discourage age falsification, players will be required to present any of three identification documents: National Identification Number (NIN), voter’s card, or international passport.

In addition, strict matchday regulations have been introduced as players are expected to wear shin guards on the pitch, no two players are permitted to share the same jersey number, and the use of hard stud boots has been prohibited.

Mariere also disclosed that a protest fee of ₦5,000 has been set for teams wishing to file complaints, urging all participating sides to adhere strictly to the rules and uphold fair play.

Matches will be played across three venues—Ozoro, Sapele, and Kwale—bringing the action closer to fans in different parts of the state.

The tournament will officially kick off on April 17 at the Southern Delta University Stadium, where Team Senators will face Isoko North in the opening fixture at 2pm.

Other fixtures promise thrilling encounters, including Udu versus Ika South, Okpe against Ndokwa West, and Burutu taking on Warri South.

Warri South West will clash with Uvwie, while Excellent FA battles Isoko FC.

A standout fixture in the opening round is the local derby between Warri North and Morak FC, expected to draw significant attention.

Additional matches will see Tellectual FC face Ethiope, Ughelli South take on Sapele, and Isoko South go up against Oshimili South.

Further ties include Team Commissioner versus Oshimili North, Aniocha North against Ndokwa East, Ethiope West facing Eagles Stars FC, and Ughelli North battling Aniocha South. Ukwuani will meet Nomad, while Ika North East squares off against Patani.

With strong backing from key stakeholders and a clear focus on youth development, the Delta Senators U-19 Unifier Cup promises to be a landmark competition in the state’s football calendar, offering young talents a valuable platform to showcase their skills and pursue their dreams.
