The long-anticipated Osun Intercollegiate Games 2024 roared to life on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone in the history of sports among tertiary institutions in Osun State.
The vibrant opening ceremony at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) Sports Complex set the tone for two weeks of electrifying competition, camaraderie, and youthful vigor.
The games, commenced with athletic displays, football matches, and a dramatic tug-of-war, captivating the audience and creating an atmosphere of friendly rivalry.
In football, the day opened with an explosive encounter between Kings University, Ode Omu, and Osun State College of Health Technology, Esa-Oke. Kings University’s defense struggled to hold back a relentless Esa-Oke attack, culminating in a commanding 4-1 victory for the College of Health Technology.
The second football match brought local pride to Obafemi Awolowo University as they secured a 2-0 victory over Oduduwa University, thrilling the home crowd. However, Oduduwa University found redemption in the tug-of-war competition, defeating OAU 2-0 in a nail-biting contest to advance to the next round.
Athletics also took center stage as various teams competed fiercely in the 100m, 200m, 400m, and 4x100m relay heats, with both male and female athletes leaving spectators in awe of their speed and determination. The finalists for these categories are set to compete for glory in the final day.
On Thursday, November 21st, the action shifts to Federal Polytechnic, Ede, where fans can expect another round of intense football showdowns. Federal Polytechnic, Ede, will face Osun State Polytechnic, Iree, at 10 a.m., followed by a clash between the Federal University of Health Sciences, Ila Orangun, and Fountain University at 12 p.m.
The opening ceremony was graced by dignitaries who emphasized the significance of the competition in fostering unity and development. Representing the Deputy Governor of Osun State, Prince Kola Adewusi, the Acting Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Sports and Special Needs, Mr. Layi Adesiyan, praised the organizers for their commitment to promoting collaboration among tertiary institutions.
“This competition is more than just sports; it’s about unity, discipline, and showcasing the immense talent within our institutions,” Adesiyan remarked.
Similarly, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Mr. Muritala Jimoh, highlighted the integral relationship between education and sports. “Both are tools for holistic development. This initiative will undoubtedly encourage students to excel both in academics and athletics,” he stated.
Running from November 20th to December 4th, the Osun Intercollegiate Games 2024 will unfold across two major venues: Obafemi Awolowo University and Federal Polytechnic, Ede.
