Enyimba have been crowned champions of the 2022-23 Nigeria Premier League season after a 1-1 draw with Rivers United at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan on Sunday night, Sportivationng.com reports.
The People’s Elephants finished top of the NPL Super Six playoffs to win a record ninth title in the Nigeria top-flight division.
Ekene Awazie gave Enyimba the lead few minutes before the break after Rivers United failed to clear their lines.
Three minutes after the break, Nyima Nwagua brought Rivers United back into the game.
Both sides failed to find a breakthrough in the encounter as they both shared the spoils.
The result handed Aba giants their first league title under former Super Eagles star, Finidi George.
Enyimba finished top of the log with nine points, same as second-placed Remo Stars but with a better goal difference.
Rivers United ended up in third with eight points and they have been a rewarded with a place in the CAF Confederation Cup.
Enyimba and Remo Stars will represent Nigeria in the CAF Champions League.
The Sky Blue Stars of Ikenne will be playing in the CAF Champions League for the first time in their history.
Enyimba will also be rewarded with a cash prize of N100 million naira.
