Super Eagles’ forward, Victor Boniface, is set to miss the African Cup of Nations due to a groin injury that kept him out of recent test games.
The 23-year-old, a crucial part of Bayer Leverkusen, faces a six-week recovery, dealing a blow to Nigeria’s AFCON campaign.
Owngoalnigeria reported that a scan revealed the severity of Boniface’s injury, prompting his return to Germany for treatment.
His absence adds to the team’s concerns, following Wilfred Ndidi’s earlier withdrawal due to a three-month muscle injury.
Boniface had posted on Instagram, “Good luck guys… Wish you all the best at AFCON,” expressing his support despite the setback.
The Super Eagles, aiming for their fourth AFCON title, will need to announce Boniface’s replacement.
Royal Antwerp’s Alhassan Yusuf stepped in for Ndidi, as Nigeria faces challenges ahead of the tournament in Cote d’Ivoire starting on January 13.
Boniface has scored 16 goals in all competitions for Bayer Leverkusen this season.
