Sikiru Alimi put Remo Stars in the lead in the 15th minute with his eighth goal of the season.
Dayo Ojo restored parity for the hosts eight minutes later.
Uche Collins gave Akwa United the lead for the first time in the encounter in the 26th minute.
Rilwan Sodiq increased Akwa United’s lead just after the hour mark to make it 3-1.
Aniekeme Okon reduced the deficit for Remo Stars in the 78th minute to end the encounter 3-2 in favour of Remo Stars.
Fatai Osho-led Akwa United moved up to 17 on the log with 10 points, while Remo Stars occupy the fourth position with 15 points.
Defending Champions Enyimba earned a last-minute 1-0 win over Lobi Stars courtesy of Alalibo Somiari’s goal two minutes from time.
The Peoples Elephants currently occupy the 16th position with 10 points from seven games, they have two games in hand.
Lobi Stars retains the second spot on the log with 17 points from nine games.
Shooting Stars maintained their 100 percent home this season with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Kano Pillars at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan.
Kareem Akande scored the only goal of the encounter just before the hour mark.
