The Delta Senators’ Unifier Cup, an Under-19 football tournament, has been officially launched in Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State, Sportivationng.com reports.

The competition is a joint initiative of the state’s three senators — Joel-Onowakpo Thomas (Delta South), Ned Nwoko (Delta North), and Ede Dafinone (Delta Central) — aimed at bringing young people across the state together through football.

Speaking at the unveiling, Onoriode Omagufi, Special Adviser on Sport Development to Senator Joel-Onowakpo, said the tournament is designed to promote unity among youths from different parts of Delta State while giving them a platform to connect and build lasting relationships.

He added that the competition will also serve as a talent showcase, with outstanding players expected to attract the attention of scouts and agents who could link them with clubs both within Nigeria and abroad.

According to him, the tournament will run for ten days, with teams representing all local government areas in the state.

Zonal qualifiers will be held across the three senatorial districts before the competition moves to the knockout stages.

Omagufi noted that the Local Organising Committee is working to ensure a smooth and well-coordinated event that will not only strengthen unity but also create opportunities for young players to develop their skills.

Inclusive Structure

In line with global standards, the tournament will feature both male and female categories, ensuring equal opportunities for young talents regardless of gender.

A total of 32 teams per category will compete, comprising representatives from the 25 local government areas, additional teams from each senatorial district, and a special “Team Senators.”

Competition Format and Venues

Matches will be played on a knockout basis across three venues:

Kwale Township Stadium (Delta North)

Sapele Township Stadium (Delta Central)

Southern Delta University Stadium, Ozoro (Delta South)

The latter will host the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and grand finale.

Opening Ceremony and International Exposure

The tournament will kick off with an opening match between Delta South and Delta Central, symbolising unity through competition.

A novelty game featuring Team Senators, ex-Super Eagles players, and celebrities is also scheduled.

Organisers revealed that international football scouts from Europe will attend the tournament to identify promising players, offering participants potential pathways to professional careers abroad.

African Union diplomats are also expected as special guests.

Strong Institutional Support

The competition is backed by key organisations, including the Delta State Government, Delta State Sports Commission, Nigeria Football Federation, Delta State Football Federation, African Union Sports Council, and the Senate Committee on Sports.

A Platform Beyond Football

Omagufi emphasised that the initiative goes beyond sports, serving as a platform for empowerment, unity, and long-term youth development.

“We are not only discovering talents but also creating opportunities that can transform lives and communities,” he added.

Stakeholders, corporate organisations, and the media have been urged to support the initiative to ensure its success and sustainability.

The Delta Senators U-19 tournament is expected to become a major platform for talent discovery and youth engagement in the state, with organisers expressing confidence that it will leave a lasting impact on future generations.

The draw for the tournament is yet to be conducted, but the opening ceremony is scheduled for April 17 at the Southern Delta University Stadium in Ozoro, which will also host the quarter-finals, semi-finals, and final matches.

Zonal matches will take place at Kwale Stadium for Delta North and Sapele Stadium for Delta Central.
