Former Super Eagles striker, Brown Ideye, has officially announced his retirement from professional football, bringing an end to a remarkable career that spanned nearly two decades.

The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) champion confirmed the decision on Tuesday, thanking his family, teammates, coaches, and fans who stood by him throughout his football journey.

Ideye, 35, began his professional career with Bayelsa United before moving abroad, where he made his mark in Switzerland with Neuchâtel Xamax. He later featured for top European clubs including Dynamo Kyiv, West Bromwich Albion, and Olympiacos, where he became a fan favorite with his eye for goal and tireless work rate.

On the international stage, Ideye earned over 30 caps for the Super Eagles of Nigeria, scoring crucial goals and playing a pivotal role in Nigeria’s triumphant AFCON campaign under late coach Stephen Keshi in South Africa in 2013.

Reflecting on his career, Ideye said:
“Football has given me so much, from unforgettable memories to lifelong friendships. I am grateful to have worn the green and white of Nigeria and to have represented my country at the highest level. It is time to close this chapter and look forward to new challenges.”

Widely regarded for his strength, pace, and aerial ability, Ideye will be remembered as one of Nigeria’s most hardworking forwards, a player who gave his all every time he stepped onto the pitch.

As he hangs up his boots, tributes have poured in from across the football world, with fans and former teammates hailing him as a “true professional” and “a champion who gave his best for Nigeria.”
