Karim Benzema scored the only goal to help Real Madrid to a 1-0 win over Liverpool to book a place in the Champions League quarter-finals, Sportivationng.com reports.

The Defending Champions won the first leg 5-2 at Anfield last month and they completed the job in Spain thanks to Benzema.

“It was a complicated game but from the start we showed we wanted to go through, and we are in the quarterfinals,” Benzema told Movistar.

“Suffering is part of today’s football. Everyone wants more, but sometimes you have to suffer in a game — the most important thing is to win and go through.”

Liverpool coach, Jurgen Klopp was disappointed that  his team could not turn the tide around.

Klopp said: “We came here with the backpack we had with the three-goals difference [from the first leg] so you need a special performance and we didn’t show a special performance tonight.

In moments it was a good performance but Real Madrid were the team in control for most of the game. They had the better chances. If you want to get through, you need to be outstanding.”

“If you want to win the game, you need to be really good, and Madrid was the better team and that’s why the right team went through to the next round.

“I was not angry after the game, I was disappointed. I would be angry if we would have played better and it was close and they won because of a penalty which isn’t a penalty or things like that, but in the end that all didn’t happen. Real Madrid was just the better side. I’m long enough in the business to respect that.”

Carlo Ancelotti showered encomiums on his players for completing the task at the Santiago Bernabeu.

“It was a good game, we delivered a complete performance. It could have been a banana skin but we were disciplined early on, with our ideas clear in our minds, and we finished strongly as well. I have no preference over our next opponents.

“Our aim is to win the Champions League and to do that, we have to get through every round. Italian football has three teams left, which is great for the game in Italy”.

Benzema has now scored seven times in the Champions League against Liverpool, more than any other player.
