The Highly-rated coach Daniel Itodo has opened up on the reasons behind his decision to join National Nationwide League Division One (NLO) side, Grassrunners Football Club as an assistant coach, Sportivationng.com reports.

Itodo, who resigned as the coach of HB Football Academy, and Sporting Supreme last month, after years of developing numerous players, who have gone on to play professional football in Europe.

He is expected to serve as an assistant coach to Edith Agoye.

Itodo appeared on Sportivation Radio’s popular programme ‘Sports Drive’ on Friday, March 27th to share his coaching journey before he was appointed as Grassrunners FC coach the following week.

The tactically astute coach expressed his delight at the opportunity to be part of the Grassrunners FC family in an interview with Sportivation Media.

Itodo said: “I am deeply honored and immensely proud to be appointed as the Assistant Coach of Grassrunners FC.

This is not just an opportunity, it is a call to serve, and to contribute to a broader vision. I want to appreciate the club’s management for the trust and confidence placed in me to contribute to the growth of the team.

Together with the players, coaching staff, and the entire Grassrunners family, we are ready to embrace the challenge, raise the standard, and pursue success with relentless determination.

“The mission is clear growth, victories, and a legacy that will stand the test of time.”

Coach Itodo opened up on the reasons behind his decision to accept the Grassrunners FC offer despite receiving numerous offers from other clubs.

He said: ” I had plenty offers, but I wanted to choose the one that has a good project. I accepted the offer because I was impressed with the club’s vision and long-term project

“From my discussions with the management, it was clear that this is not just about immediate results, but about building a sustainable football philosophy, developing young talents. That kind of clear direction and ambition is something every coach wants to be part of.

“The club’s commitment to structure, discipline, and growth aligns perfectly with my values.”

Itodo has enjoyed an impressive start to life at Grassrunners FC with the club recording victories  in his first three matches against Eko United, Tico FC in friendly matches, and AMG in the N Youth League.

He played for the likes of KSV  Hessen in Germany, and Guingamp in France before he retired from football.

He is regarded as one of the best coaches in Nigeria because of his exceptional ability to develop players and transform raw talents.

Over the years, he has played a key role in nurturing emerging talents, many of whom have gone on to achieve greater heights in their careers.

Grassrunners FC was founded in 2024 by Gbenga Abejoye, and they compete in the National Nationwide League One, N Youth League, and the Federation Cup.

The club is known for producing talented players, who have gone on to play for European clubs.
