The 2025/26 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season kicked off in thrilling fashion as Remo Stars and Rivers United battled to a 1-1 draw in Abeokuta on Friday.
It was a game that had everything — early goals, end-to-end action, and late drama, including a red card.
Rivers United wasted no time announcing their intent, taking the lead inside just three minutes. Former Remo Stars forward Aniekeme Okon struck the first goal of the new NPFL season, finishing coolly after Timothy’s deflected cross caused chaos in the box. His early strike silenced the home fans and gave the visitors a dream start.
But Remo Stars responded quickly through their returning hero Victor Mbaoma, who needed just six minutes to make his mark. The prolific striker latched onto Samuel Anakwe’s pinpoint pass and slotted past goalkeeper Sochima Victor to level the score at 1-1 in the 9th minute.
From then on, both teams produced an entertaining contest. Rivers United’s midfield trio — Deputy Echeta, Morice Chukwu, and Bernard Ovoke — worked hard to control the tempo, while Remo Stars looked dangerous on the counter through the pace of Andy Okpe and the creativity of Dayo Ojo.
The home side came closest to snatching a late winner when Mbaoma’s powerful header was brilliantly tipped over the bar by Sochima Victor. At the other end, Okon nearly doubled his tally with a curling effort that sailed just wide.
The closing stages brought late drama, as Rivers defender Temple Emekayi was sent off in stoppage time (90+4’) for dangerous play, leaving his side to finish the match with 10 men.
Despite the dismissal, Rivers United held on to secure a valuable point away from home, while Remo Stars were left slightly frustrated not to turn their dominance into victory.
With both teams considered strong contenders this season, the result sets the tone for what promises to be a fiercely competitive NPFL campaign.
