Despite the passion and talents in the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), no Nigerian club made the latest ranking of the top 20 most valuable football clubs in Africa.
The list, dominated by North and Southern African powerhouses, reignites debate over the competitiveness and commercial strength of Nigeria’s domestic league.
Reactions have poured in across local football circles, with some enthusiasts insisting the NPFL still holds weight in players development and local fan engagement.
Others, however, say the exclusion reflects deeper structural challenges, including poor infrastructure, limited marketing, and inconsistent club administration.
“Someone here was just arguing with me about how valuable the NPFL is,” one fan remarked online. “This ranking says otherwise.”
As Nigeria prepares for the new league season, the spotlight is now firmly on what changes can be made to return its clubs to continental relevance — not just on the pitch, but on the balance sheet too.
According to CAFCLCC on X, the 2025 CAF Clubs’ Ranking shows no Nigerian team among Africa’s top 20 clubs, with Egyptian, South African, and Moroccan sides leading the chart.
