The Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF) has assured of a best blend of entertainment and sports as curtain falls on Friday (today) at the National Boxing Week and Commonwealth Games Trials in Lagos.
The event, which got on the way on Sunday, March 1st, with a seminar for officials and coaches, will climax with frenetic brawls in the squared ropes at the Brai Ayonote Boxing Complex, National Stadium Surulere
With 20 bouts on the fight card, the finale will determine the 10 boxers who will represent the country in the boxing event of the 2026 Commonwealth Games, as the championship brawls take center stage.
A total of 128 boxers — comprising 101 men and 27 women — began the competition on Tuesday, March 3, and the finalists across all 10 weight categories will hope to secure their spot on Team Nigeria for the Glasgow Games.
The Technical Director of the NBF Adura Olaleyin, said selected boxers who made the final cut would be invited to camp, while outstanding athletes from the trials would also serve as sparring partners in preparation for the Games.
“We are excited about the turnout of the event, and we hope we can continue our exploits at the Games this year because Nigeria has always been among the outstanding teams whenever boxing is featured at the Games,” she said.
More than 100 bouts have been decided across the four days of hostilities, leading to tonight’s final.
Nigeria will field boxers in 10 weight categories — five for men (55kg, 65kg, 70kg, 80kg and 90kg) and five for women (51kg, 57kg, 65kg, 70kg and +70kg).
The Vice President of the Nigeria Boxing Federation Hon. Omonlei has urged boxing fans to turn up in their numbers as the nation celebrates some of its best athletes in a colorful ceremony.
“We have everything in place to ensure today’s event lingers in the mind of those in attendance for years to come, aside the action in the squared ropes, there will be plenty of music and dance performances to further entertain the crowd”. Imadu added.
The Director General of the National Sports Commission Hon. Bukola Olopade will lead a host of dignitaries to grace the event today in Lagos.
