Kelechi Iheanacho grabbed a late winner for the Nigerian team as they were made to dig deep for the win in a dramatic manner.
Sensational striker Victor Osimhen had scored a brace after 32 minutes before Mustapha Bundu hit the net to reduce the deficit for the Sierra Leoneans at the break.
The game took a different dimension and it appeared as if Peseiro’s team were going to settle for draw when Augustus Kargbo fired home the leveler for Leone Stars on the 84th minute.
However, the game was eventually decided and won for Nigeria when Zaidu Sanusi teed up Iheanacho for the winner in the closing stage of the enthralling encounter.
Speaking at the post-match preser, the Portuguese tactician hailed his players for their fighting spirit, saying they ‘fought till the end.’
“Our team qualified. It was a hard match. Our team never gave up. We fought till the end,” Peseiro said in the post-match press conference.
“Sierra Leone did a fantastic job. In the first half, we created seven to eight clear opportunities and only scored twice in the second half. But, you have to win. It was a very good match.
“Our team is the best in this group. I think we did a good job today against a good team. It was a very hard match. I am very happy with my players. Congratulations to my players because it is not easy.”
