Peseiro Quits As Super Eagles Coach

By Taiwo Ibrahim

Jose Peseiro has announced that he will no longer continue as the coach of the Super Eagles after guiding the team to a silver medal finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Sportivationng.com reports.

The Portuguese manager’s contract officially expired on Thursday and he has taken to social media to confirm his exit.

Peseiro said: “We would like to express our gratitude to Sir Amaju Pinnick (the president who signed us), President Ibrahim Gusau, General Secretary Mohammed Sanusi, Secretary Dayo Enebi, the NFF, all the Staff, and especially all the PLAYERS, with whom leading has been a great pleasure.

“Guys, we are thankful; it has been a privilege to be part of this family. We will miss you, but we will always be there for you, no matter where you are. A big hug to all of you,”

Prior to the Nations Cup in Ivory Coast, Peseiro’s future was uncertain following the team’s poor performances especially in the FIFA World Cup qualifiers after disappointing draws against Lesotho and Zimbabwe.

He was however, handed a six month contract and a semi-final target at the Nations Cup, which he surpassed by guiding the team to the final of the competition.

Peseiro managed the Super Eagles in 22 games, winning 11, losing seven and recording seven draws.

The NFF needs to act fast to name his replacement as the Super Eagles are billed to take part in the next FIFA window with a friendly match against Argentina.
