Abuja, Nigeria — The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Sports Development, Hon. Anthony Adeyinka Adeboye, has expressed strong optimism about the future of Nigerian tennis after attending matches at the ongoing 2026 ITF J30 World Tennis Tour in Abuja.
The SSA, who was present at the venue to observe some of the games, described the tournament as a major boost for grassroots tennis development in Nigeria.
He noted that the level of competition and exposure provided by the ITF event represents a significant milestone for young Nigerian players.
“I am very happy with the number of talented junior players we have in this country. Watching them compete confidently against international opponents shows that Nigeria has the raw potential to become a strong force in global tennis,” Adeboye stated.
The ITF J30 tournament forms part of the International Tennis Federation’s structured junior pathway, offering young athletes the opportunity to gain international ranking points and experience high-level competition—an essential stepping stone toward professional tennis.
Hon. Adeboye emphasized that consistent engagement and structured support for athletes at a young age are critical to building sustainable success.
“With the necessary support and continued engagement at this formative stage, these young athletes will grow into world-class professionals. Grassroots development is not optional; it is the foundation of national sporting excellence,” he added.
The SSA also used the occasion to commend the Nigeria Tennis Federation, the tournament organizers, and the National Sports Commission for successfully hosting the international competition in Abuja.
According to him, such initiatives align with the Federal Government’s broader objective of repositioning sports as a strategic tool for youth empowerment, discipline, and global competitiveness.
